Statement on Taxation

To Our Fellow Davis County Republicans,

As fiscal conservatives, we understand that taxation is necessary for government to perform essential services. However, we also recognize that the power to tax is the power to control. It is imperative that we, as citizens, remain vigilant and engaged when it comes to government spending and taxation decisions that affect our families, businesses, and communities.

This month, both the Central Weber Sewer Improvement District and the Davis School District have scheduled Truth in Taxation hearings to propose property tax increases. Additionally, Davis County and several cities are considering tax hikes in their upcoming budgets.

These proposals come at a time when many in our community are already facing the challenges of inflation and rising living costs.

Our Davis County Republican Platform is clear:

“We recognize the necessity for taxation in order for government to perform and administer those services that meet the public needs. However, we recognize the power to tax is also the power to control, and that the best way to control government is to strictly control the amount and form of taxes imposed on the people.”

We believe taxes should be:

  • Inexpensive to administer and collect.
  • Free from creating excessive burdens on taxpayers.
  • Designed to avoid competitive disadvantages.
  • Non-disruptive to market dynamics.

Before any tax increases are considered, we urge our elected officials to put government back into its proper role and ensure that spending is controlled.

Now is the time for your voice to be heard. We call upon all Davis County Republicans to participate in these upcoming public hearings and contact their elected officials. Let them know that you stand for fiscal responsibility, limited government, and that you expect tax increases to be a measure of last resort—not a routine practice.

Here’s how you can make a difference:

  • Attend the Truth in Taxation hearings for the Weber Basin Water District and Davis School District.
  • Contact the Davis County Commissioners and your City Council members to express your opposition to unnecessary tax increases.
  • Encourage friends and neighbors to join you in advocating for responsible government spending.

When government functions within its proper role, tax increases are not necessary. Together, we can hold our elected officials accountable and ensure that government remains a servant of the people, not a burden upon them.

Thank you for standing with us in defending the principles of limited government, fiscal restraint, and individual liberty.

Passed Unanimously by the Davis County Republican Party Executive Committee

Don Guymon, Chair
